More than $23 Billion are to be invested in Latin American hydrogen projects
20+ hydrogen projects in Latin America
Chile plans to be one of the largest exporters of hydrogen until 2040.
It is expected that by 2050, hydrogen in all its presentations will account for 18% of world energy consumption.
OPEN GREEN HYDROGEN PROJECT CALL
Investment: US $30 M
Chile’s government is offering $30 million to support development of green hydrogen projects larger than 10MW before the end of 2025.
The call is open to national and international companies and will support one or more projects to become operational before the end of 2025. The call through the national development corporation Corfo forms part of Chile’s ambition to become a leader globally in the production and export of green hydrogen, which has been gathering momentum since its launch in November last year.
Applications are due in September with Corfo available for enquiries and clarification until July.
VERNE PROJECT
Status: Pilot.
Description: Project for the electrification of transport through green hydrogen production–being developed by Uruguay’s National Administration of Fuels, Alcohols and Portland, Uruguayan power utility UTE, and the MIEM itself.
The project foresees the setting up of green hydrogen production using a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyzer with a capacity of 500 kg/day and a charging station in Montevideo.
The three entities also received financial support from the Inter-American Development Bank and the German Corporation for International Cooperation.
GREEN HYDROGEN PLANT
Investment: US$5.4bn
Company: Enegix Energy
Description: Green hydrogen plant under development by Australia-based Enegix Energy–a project that is expected to require 3.6 GW of wind and solar facilities and is currently the region’s largest hydrogen project.
DURANGO PROJECT
Status: Planning stage
Investment: US $1.35 B
Location: Lerdo, Durango
Description: Pase 1 would convert Tarafert urea project to green ammonia by using green hydrogen, renewable energy. Phase 2 aims to develop dedicated green hydrogen, ammonia project.
GREEN HYDROGEN PILOT PROJECT
Company: Ecopetrol
Location: Cartagena
The plan is to import a small electrolyzer from Spain in the first quarter of 2022 to test the production and ap-plication of the emerging fuel at its 165,000 b/d Cartagena refinery on the Caribbean coast.
Ecopetrol’s refining system in Colombia currently consumes up to 130 t/yr of grey hydrogen produced from fossil fuels, including 68pc at Cartagena and 32pc at the 250,000 b/d Barrancabermeja refinery in Santander department. The hydrogen is used to remove sulfur from motor fuels.
